The RockMinas Tirith is split in two by a great rock. The basic outline of the rock was actually constructed before Levels 2 to 7 so that the correct construction of the other levels could take place around it. Only once the basic construction of these other levels were completed, did I return to completing and reinforcing the central rock. Cutting For Upper LevelsA piece of this section was cut out to use as the basis to build Levels 4 to 7 around. This would allow the upper section to "plug in" to the central rock, or removed for transport or removed when I wanted to use it separately. A slit was cut in the central rock and the horizontal base of the upper section was fitted into this slit. This allowed reinforcing pieces to be glued in place before cutting the upper module away. Doing this meant that the upper rock section retained its shape relative to the main rock and so the two section would align perfectly later on. More ReinforcingInside the structure in the picture on the left is seen the reinforcing piece which helps retain the shape. The flaps were used later to reinforce the vertical rear section. Prior to this though, many more reinforcing pieces and horizontal reinforcing plates were added to increase the strength of the central rock. More Cutting For Upper LevelsWith the addition of an extension module for the upper module to site on (see previous page) a further piece of the central rock module was cut out. Once the extension module was complete, the fit was checked and a few minor adjustments made before completing the reinforcing of the central rock. The Next StepWith the reinforcing complete in the central rock, it was now time to put all the modules together. The result can be seen in the photos at the bottom of this page. Above. The chunk has been cut out of the central rock for the construction of the upper module (Levels 4 to 7). |
Above. The basic rock complete. The second chunk has been taken out and a horizontal reinforcing piece added. What cannot be seen is all the additional reinforcing that has gone inside the central rock to strengthen it and carry the weight of the upper module and the extension module. |
