Click here to find out more about each of these modules. About the GameThe Lord of the Rings Fantasy Battlegame allows players to recreate scenes from the trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkien and the movies by Peter Jackson. The rules allow for huge battles, but it is the skirmish actions where they really excel. Players control the "Good" or "Evil" side. Not only can you take the part of the Fellowship or Saruman or Sauron, but you can also play scenarios from the the other Ages of Middle Earth. But you don't have to follow the book or the movie; it is also possible to make up your own scenarios. HeroesHeroes (both good and evil) play an important part in the Lord of the Rings game. In the rules, heroes have a certain number of Might, Will and Fate points which are used up to adjust dice rolls or give the hero another chance. Might points allow adjustment of many dice rolls including rolls to hit and to wound as well as whether jump or climb successfully. They can also be used to gain priority for moving, shooting or combat. Clever use of this can make the difference between victory and defeat. Will points allow magic spells to be cast or countered. Fate points allow a 50/50 chance of not taking a wound. Choosing carefully when to use Might, Will and Fate points is one of the great tactical challenges of the game. Apart from a few special characters, these points are limited and once used up - that is it. ScenariosThe scenarios not only cover the journeys of the Fellowship in the Third Age of Middle Earth, but also the earlier battles of the First Age between Sauron and the alliance of Men, Elves and Dwarves. One of the great things about the skirmish nature of the rules is that it allows for a great variety of scenarios. This is what keeps it interesting. Some wargames rules are only suitable for set piece battles. Lord of the Rings covers these nicely but also allows for siege warfare, retreat scenarios, heroic combats, escape scenarios, ambushes and chase scenarios to name but a few. These vastly different scenarios are all covered without adding complex rules. GeneralFigures used are 25mm (1:72 scale). The rules are published by Games Workshop. A game can last as little as 20 minutes, so you try many different scenarios in the one evening. Long scenarios can last many hours; it is your choice.
