Mirkwood

Home to wood Elves and spiders. Taken over by the Necromancer some time after Sauron's defeat at the hand of the Last Alliance. Unbeknown to the habitants of Middle Earth, the Necromancer was actually Sauron. He went in disguise while he was rebuilding his strength following the loss of the One Ring.

With the darkening of Mirkwood, many travellers now avoided its depths. Even the once friendly Elves became more solitary and less inclined to welcome those who entered their realm.

Above. Ben Shannon's themed army for Cheezecon 2006 was a Mirkwood based army of creatures. For Cheezecon each player had to provide two objective markers. Ben cleverly chose Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey as objectives for his army to try and capture in the scenarios.

Above. The Spider Queen menaces a dwarf. The Spider Queen can hatch some Broodlings (clusters of baby spiders) which makes her quite a powerful character in the game.

Above. The spiders have been hand made from "green stuff", a two-part epoxy putty. In game terms the small spiders play as Ruffians.

Above. A menacing sight for the opponent.

Above. Hard to see in the photo because of the camera flash, but the spider in the front left is holding a tombstone with "BB" on it . The "BB" represents Bilbo Baggins. Although Bilbo is not actually dead, the spiders are hoping for him to be and are using this to spur them on.

Above. Wild wargs and a bat swarm provide extra protection for the hitting power of the Spider Queen. Bat swarms are best used in conjunction with other figures to reduce the fight value of tough opponents such as Aragorn.
