Fangorn

The ancient forest of Fangorn is home to the Ents. These tree herders tend the forests. They are slow moving and slow thinking creatures, operating on a different time scale to most creatures of Middle Earth.

Treebeard was the best known of the Ents. He was initially wary of the Hobbits Merry and Pippin because he thought they were "little Orcs". However, he befriended them and regailed them with tails about the history of the Ents.

Outraged by the destruction of the forest caused by Saruman's Orcs, Treebeard roused the Ents. With their great strength they destroyed the fortress of Isengard, but were not able to destroy the tower of Orthanc.

Although they live a long time, the Ents are a dying race because they have lost the Ent Wives.
