DBA Winter Tournament

15-Jun-07 Fun During the Dark Nights of Winter

June the 15th saw the Nunawading Wargames Association winter DBA tournament played out on a chilly Friday night. Despite the cold, 20 players including several visitors from the Monday Knights wargame club battled it out over 4 rounds contesting 7 awards. An enjoyable night was had by all and a variety of different armies were on display.

As in previous years, this event was well supported by our great sponsors Military simulations and Eureka Miniatures. Military Simulations donated a fantastic Roman board game while Eureka donated the figures for all the trophies and a Spartan DBA army for the Junior champion. The Umpire for the night was Neil Hughes who managed to break his wrist the week before playing rugby, and had to finish painting the trophies & Spartan army with one hand. Photographs were taken on the night by Richard Bradley. Thanks also to Tom Brake and Nick Pavlovski who helped with table and board setup.

Winners and Anti-Winners

The tournament ran smoothly and was played in a good spirit. Peter Stone with his Medieval French ran almost the perfect tournament only losing one element and was a deserving champion.

Second place was hotly contested by several players but it was Scott Nicholas who fought back from a defeat in round one to claim second.

The gods of fate and DBA were clearly against luckless Adrian Stacey with his War of the Roses English. In stark contrast to Peter Stone, Adrian ran the almost perfect anti tournament losing all his games and destroying only one element. Better luck next time Adrian, but he took home the encouragement award for his efforts.

Playing the Game
No Guts, No Glory

Five players competed for the Guts and Glory award which was down on last year. The army must have no knights or elephants and it takes a brave player to take an army lacking that fire power into a Tournament.

This year's winner was Andreas Kammel with his Post Mongol Samurai. Samurai usually make nice knight fodder at tournaments but not only did Andreas pick up the Guts and Glory, but third place as well!

Playing the Game

Jon Bunce won the Best Painted Army with his excellent Cilician Armenian that he had painted up for the DBA Crusade campaign.

Under the generalship of Jon, this army also proved a tough opponent; winning 3 out of 4 rounds. It just finished out of the placings, achieving an excellent 4th place.

Junior Champion

One of the hottest contested awards this year was the Junior Champion award with 4 players competing.

Iain McCartney, William Kelly, Dylan Hughes and Harley George were in contention for this sought after award.

As the last round began three of the four junior players were all sitting on one win each, with only a couple of points separating them.

In the last round Iain McCartney rallied to win his last game while the other players could not win again leaving all players with one win each.

Iain McCartney and last year's winner Dylan Hughes were tied on 19 points each with the junior champion award being given to Dylan Hughes who won on count back 127 to 107.

It was great to see young players taking up DBA, hopefully this trend continues in future tournaments and we have even more junior players!
