NAPOLEONIC - Battle of Liebertwolkwitz- voted equal 3rd BEST DISPLAY

Tony Chandler obtained equal 3rd for his appealing display of the 1813 battle of Liebertwolkwitz. This was a meeting engagement that escalated into the largest cavalry clash of the Napoleonic Wars.

It was meant to be a fighting withdrawal but as more and more troops became embroiled it turned into a major battle.

It was the start of a widespread series of battles over three days which became known as the Battle of Leipzig.

Bonaparte sent the flamboyant Marshal Murat with 32,000 infantry and 7,000 cavalry to delay the leading elements of the Army of Bohemia.

This Allied army was under Schwarzenberg. It included Austrian, Russian and Prussian units with over 60,000 infantry & 6,000 cavalry.

Murat was in the thick of the fighting and was almost captured several times.

The see-sawing struggle lasted most of the day. Casualties were high and despite the efforts of both armies the battle ended in a draw.

Presented by Tony Chandler with help from Des and Mark.

AMERICAN CIVIL WAR - Antietam / Sharpsburg

Major General McClellan confronted General Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia at Sharpsburg in Maryland.

On the morning of 17th September 1862 the battle of Antietam (also known as Sharpsburg) began. It became the single bloodiest day in American military history.

It was the first invasion of the north by the Confederate troops.

Union assaults eventually pierced the Confederate centre, but their advantage was squandered.

Although having twice the troops of Lee, McLellan was tentative and did not commit them all. It was one of many chances to end the civil war early that went begging.

This historical refight was presented by John Quinn and Peter Jenkins.

NAPOLEONIC - Fuentes d'Onoro

It is during the Peninsular War on the Portuguese/Spanish border on 5th May 1811.

The French under Marshal Massena have retreated from Portugal, foiled at the last by the defensive lines of Torres Vedras.

The British and allied forces under Wellesley (who later became the Duke of Wellington) have followed them in an attempt to push them all the way back to France.

They wanted to prevent the French from relieving the important frontier fortress of Almeida which the Allies had besieged.

This is Massena's last chance to prove to Napoleon that he still has what it takes. The Allied position is strong and based around the village of Fuentes d'Onoro.

During the historical battle, the village was the scene of bloody fighting and changed hands several times.

The French forces were large, and finally glad to fight in an attempt to exact revenge on their pursuers.

Tim and friends put on a display with a huge array of figures. They are part of the active Napoleonic group at NWA.
