Games 2004 In The Side Room

Above. Along the left wall of the main hall are the Eastern Suburbs Scale Modelling Club, M.I.B. Global, Mind Bogglers and Military Simulations. In the middle of the picture from front to rear are Motor Torpedo Boats, Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Fantasy and  the massive Lord of the Rings display featuring the fortress city of Minas Tirith (although not obvious in this photo). At the right from front to rear is the Airfield Attack, Battle of the Bulge and the kitchen.

LORD OF THE RINGS - voted BEST OVERALL DISPLAY

Dominating the main hall was the model of the giant city of Minas Tirith. Over 2.4 metres (6 feet) high above the table and over 2.4 metres (6 feet) wide, the Battle for Minas Tirith and the Pelennor Fields drew large crowds. The public joined in the epic battle in the struggle of good against evil by helping in a siege tower attack against the mighty walls of the city and joining the horsemen of Rohan as they battled a huge Mumakil.

This impressive model of the city made by John Shaw towered over the battlefield. John was helped on the day by Glenn Harvey and son Murray. To see lots more photos of this display, click on Games 2004 Lord of the Rings

If you want to see how this mammoth project was put together click on Lord of the Rings. Making Minas Tirith.

To see how the Mumakil was made click on Lord of the Rings. Making A Mumakil.

AIRFIELD ATTACK - voted BEST NWA DISPLAY

World War 2 raid on a remote airfield behind enemy lines by David Stirling's SAS in the North African campaign. Inspired by the reconnaisance patrols of the Long Range Desert Group the SAS played havoc with the supply lines of the Germans. Older players were able to relive memories of Sarge from the television series Rat Patrol.

Once again Neil Gerhard and Sean O'Neill put on a highly polished and fun game for the public.

The Germans take some prisoners . . .

. . . but not before many planes have been set ablaze.

BATTLE OF THE BULGE

World War 2. Battle of the Bulge. Baraque de Fraiture (or the battle for Parker's Crossroads) December 1944.

With the Ardennes Forest under snow, the Germans surprised the Americans with a massive counter-attack. The game depicts a defence by a mish-mash of American units, initially led by Major Parker from the 589th Field Artillery Battalion. Also present were units from the 325th Glider Battalion, the 203rd AA battalion, the 87th Cavalry Squadron & 3rd Armoured Division. Thrown against this ad hoc group were units of the experienced 2nd SS Panzer Division. Our World War 2 regulars Chris Bridgland, Paul Baker, Alan Webster and Stephen White put on this stunning display after weeks of making their own trees to supplement their existing stock of commercially bought ones.
