DBM/DBA Terrain

Rivers

"Rivers" in DBM represent the smaller ordinary types which were fordable in some way (without the aid of boats or naval vessels).  Rivers are a popular choice for players wanting to restrict the manoeuvrability of their opponent's army. An attacker has the option to place a river in either flank sectors running roughly parallel to either tables side edge river_attack.gif (968 bytes), while defenders can only place a "traverse" river running across river_defence.gif (996 bytes) the front  of their deployment area. Great rivers in DBM are otherwise treated as Water Ways (eg. Danube, Yangse .... etc.)

DBM rivers are limited to a maximum width of 200 paces (that's 4" in 15mm scale) or as narrow as required. All river  banks provide an advantage to defenders, and unless classed as "paltry", all movement across them is restricted to 100 paces (2" in 15mm scale).

Contrary to popular belief, most rivers aren't blue! This hand made example has been cut into foam tiles with a polyurethane resin used for water. Less portable but very realistic.

Large river sections handmade by Martin Morgan using techniques taken from the GW website. Involves a cardboard base with banks built up using plaster and flocked.

Another example of a river cut into chipboard tiles with a clear resin poured in to represent water.
river3.jpg (45578 bytes)
The simplest, cheapest and most common style of river used by players, especially beginners. Blue felt cut into strips. The rocks have been placed to represent a ford.

Small river/creek with ford, made & sold by Adventurous Spirit (unpainted). They are moulded from a durable latex rubber in 200mm long section. The example shown has been over done with the flocking, they come up a lot better when just painted.

This larger river is also from Adventurous Spirit, design for 25mm scale but ideal for use as a larger river in 15mm DBM
