Report - 22nd to 24th January 2006 - Canberra, Australia |

Many thanks to our
sponsors this year. Their contributions have been detailed in the relevant sections of this report. As Umpire for the 2006 Championships I was very impressed with the spirit in which virtually all games were played. The vast majority of rulings I was requested to make were as a result of situations where both players were genuinely unsure of a situation. There were very few cases where players were in dispute over a move or other rule interpretation and I didn't witness any serious arguments between players. Aside from the inevitable rulings on unusual contact situations and spontaneous moves, the majority of questions from players related to clarifications of Version 3.1 rules, in particular the rule concerning march moves in the vicinity of skirmishers. A few players were noted as being consistently slow, however the imposition of blitz rules ensured results in most games. Overall umpiring was a enjoyable experience this year, thanks largely to the good attitude of virtually all participants.
Many thanks to our sponsors;
Their generosity is very much appreciated. Thanks very much also to our umpire Karl Hamlyn who did a great job. There was no real dissension on the weekend and almost all games I saw were being played in an excellent spirit. Karl deserves a lot of the credit for this. For somebody to willingly give up 3 days of their valuable time is a big ask. Karl not only did it gladly but he did the job well. Thanks also to those who did the list checking especially Ross Dawe and Django Upton, and Andrew Berkin & Peter Paddon who volunteered to help.
