This years battle for the South Pacific Championship was expected to be close. Previous winners NSW, had lost their top player to umpiring duties, QLD had recruited ex-Vic top seed Marcus Watson and the western states WA & SA were struggling to field a team (they ended up combining).

Army selection this year was slightly more diverse than previous tournaments. Rumors were ripe about an influx of Samurai armies but only one managed to appear on the day. Patrician Romans (4) again prove popular, followed by Beja (3), Late Romans (3) & Sicilian (3). The split of armies across all 4 books was significantly different to 2002. Book 2 armies were down from 44% to 32% while Book 4 increased from 21% to 33% reflecting a steady increase over the years in the popularity of medieval armies. Book 1 total 16% and Book 3 19%.
The level of "draws" was significantly down at 20% compared to the previous year (30%). This was no doubt due to the smaller army size being used (350AP to 375AP in 2002). Interestingly, of the 53 drawn games, 46% come from less than 16% of the players.

Countbacks
Countbacks were conducted in accordance with SAAW Tournament Guidelines, section 8;
- If the tied players actually had a game, the winner of that game is ranked higher. In the case of a three or more way tie. Only use this step if one player defeated all the others currently tied.
- If they did not play use the sum of opponents scores the players whose opponents scored higher is ranked above the other. Note that if one of a player’s opponents left the competition early, project that players final score using an average of his actual games completed.
