Australia Day Weekend saw the running of our national DBM championship in Canberra hosted by the CGS, and organised by the SAAW. This event is the "Mecca" of DBM in Australia with players travelling from all major cities to compete for the national title. Numbers were slightly down on the previous year (88 competitors) with severe bush fire conditions deterring a few groups from making the trip.

Many thanks  to Troy Adlington for giving up his long weekend to umpire. He did an excellent job Umpire.jpg (16330 bytes) administering the event single handed, arbitrating numerous tough decisions, the least of which involved putting down a revolt by the unruly Scottish Tartan army :) As part of the SAAW's effort to organise this event,  umpiring duties are dished out on rotation between the states (2004, get ready QLD!)

Performances worth mentioning over the weekend; Steve Horvat, ranked 74th in the tournament, finished 6th overall taking out "Most Improved Player" and   "Top Dog Award" with Skythians. Young Chris Rhodan, ranked 73rd, took down 3rd seed Mike Phillips for the coveted "Porus Award" and finished a very respectable 14th. Brett Kvisle, in his second Cancon for DBM finished a remarkable 3rd (ranked 62nd). Well done guys.

While hosted by the CGS, this event is organised by members of the SAAW, a national committee of volunteers established to promote & organise interstate competitions. If you enjoyed participating in the tournament, please show your support by registering as a member (no charge.)
