Learning the GQ3 Tactical Air Rules PDF Print E-mail
Written by John Shaw

111210gq3tacair03sIn testing various World War 2 naval rules we had found that "GHQ WW2 Micronauts", "General Quarters 3" and "Naval Thunder" all handled ship-to-ship combat well. There are distinct differences in the way they handle gunnery and damage, but each works okay in their own way. Each of us had slight preferences, but this did not clearly choose one rule set over another. So we turned to see how each of these rules handled air and submarine combat to see if this would break the tie.

General Quarters 3 has two methods of handling aerial combat. The first is a campaign set which is a quick and effective way of handling the combat if you don't want to go into details. The other is the tactical set which has more detail. Having tried the campaign rules it was now time to try the tactical.

Napoleonic Cold Steel Game 18-Nov-11 PDF Print E-mail

111118mitcham39sIn preparation for the upcoming Wagram re-fight, we played a 1:120 scale battle French versus Austrians. Tim and Andrew S. playing the horrible Hapsburgs, while Tony and I commanded the Emperor's finest.

I hadn't really got my head around what 1:120 meant, assuming that for the same number of points, I'd have half the number of troops I'd usually have on the table-top, so Tony and I started out drastically outnumbered!

Napoleonic Cold Steel Battle Report 26-Nov-11 PDF Print E-mail

John R. reckons he can write my After Action Reports himself; "If only I'd done...", "I should have done...", "I didn't spot..." etc. etc. Funny b*stard!

Unfortunately he's right, though: Last Saturday's game at the Croydon venue turned out to be exactly this sort of game! Robin and I took on Jim's Austrians with our respective French forces at the 1:120 scale, but Robin's arithmetic let him down leaving him with the niggling feeling he'd short changed himself. Events were to prove that he was probably correct!

incursionsSOTR 1949 is a tabletop wargame that uses 28mm miniatures to create fast and furious battles in a world where World War 2 never ended.

The year is 1949. The world that you remember never existed. History has been twisted and corrupted. The Second World War still rages. The world is a blasted wasteland pockmarked by the scars of an atomic war. The very air we breathe is a contagion.

Welcome to the world of Secrets of the Third Reich.

Battle of the River Plate PDF Print E-mail

grafspee1sAnother popular battle which is useful for comparing some of the available World War 2 naval rules is the Battle of the River Plate. The rule set to be used this time is General Quarters 3 - known as GQ3 for short. The battle occurred in December 1939, early in the second world war. The German heavy cruiser Admiral Graf Spee had been sinking freighters in the South Atlantic and the Indian Ocean. The Royal Navy had many groups of warships seeking the Graf Spee. In search of more prey, the Graf Spee ran into one of these groups at the mouth of the River Plate in South America. The British group consisted of the heavy cruiser Exeter plus the light cruisers Ajax and Achilles.

Rematch at Denmark Strait PDF Print E-mail

110729mitcham19sFollowing the fun they had with The Battle of Denmark Strait, where the outcome was virtually identical to history, the two Johns decided to have a rematch. This was to see whether the ‘WWII Micronauts: The Game’ rules by GHQ could give a different outcome.

The scenario was the attempt of the KGM Bismarck and Prinz Eugen to break out into the Atlantic past the picket line of British ships. They were spotted by the British cruisers Suffolk and Norfolk, who called in reinforcements in the shape of HMS Hood and Prince of Wales.
